Among the works in the V&A study room, I find Hammersley’s works fascinating. The code-like texts and numbers aligned to create beautiful minimal artworks reminiscent of quiet paintings like Agnes Martin’s but also playful. To me, it’s the only work with humour in it ( especially with the names like “A MAZE…ZING” or “SCALLOP POTATOES” ) and somehow it seems more human than the other works in the collection. After carefully picking up the papers one by one from the huge pile, I felt like a computer was joking around with me.
DOES HUMOUR MAKES US MORE HUMAN ?
Another work that I gear towards is the computer poem. It starts with delicate romantic verses but then abruptly ends with *end of run* and continues with its computer language. A high contrast that made me chuckle as if the romantic poet suddenly turns into a cold machine spilling words that don’t make sense to us human anymore.
DOES ROMANCE MAKES US MORE HUMAN ?
More on these later…
