A summary.

The Artefact that I chose is Frederic Hammersley’s computer generated drawings. It’s a form of portfolio of 72 drawings printed on perforated papers. The drawing is made with symbols, letters or codes to form abstract images. The images are made within a certain grid and restriction so it is not as free form as drawing traditionally. For each drawing there is a label/name underneath. The labels/names are witty and sometimes even humorous when contrasted with the coldness and orderliness of the images. Ones like “A MAZE..ZING” “YOYO ALMOST” and “SCALLOP POTATOES” are what drew me into the work.
Out of all the artefacts in the study room this artefact is the one that’s not as cold or distant. It has humour in it as if the computer or the artist is joking around with me. The way it was displayed in the study room, in a pile of paper making you flip through the papers one by one and finding new interesting images each time, makes it physical and somehow relatable. It feels more human so I chose it. Another reason why I chose it is because of how plain and minimal looking it can be. The lack of in-your-face elements make it a good clean base to work from and the lack of style will not interfere or overwhelm me in the future as I produce the final work.
Side note : Frederic Hammersley’s paintings are so lovely. Abstract, graphic with great colour palettes. I can see the playfulness that appeared in the artefact.
