The Zine

The start of this term came with a mini brief. Our task was to make a small A6 zine using the one-page zine method. The zine was meant to be about our work or ideas that we are exploring or planning to do for EP&IV / Final Major Project. Since it’s not required to be informative or academic and we were given freedom (as always) to express it how ever we like; I decided to create this thing :

Because of the zine structure (one-page zine) I wanted it to be an all around piece of work where everything is connected. The content of the zine is like a short poem of sorts about how “I am embracing emptiness” and how the shapes and the stories interact with each other. Muted colours, organic shapes, and white space are used to convey the idea.

The zine can be read three ways:

  1. Left to right like a normal publication but can be never-ending as the “first” and “last” pages can be connected. A loop.
  2. Spread out (sideA) to see the whole organic shape that formed the narrative of each page. The shape creates the story and the reader can pick and choose which ever text/sentence they want to read.
  3. Spread out (sideB) to see the same shape but it’s made out of a brief summary of my ideas. The summary can be read as a loop as well.

The purpose of this zine is to have a functional cohesive piece of work that portrays a single theme or concept. I want to create work that shows the relationship between narrative and form and I want it to make sense. I’m very glad I’ve achieved a little bit of that today in the class. I thought people might be confused at first because there were no presentation or explanation at the beginning.

I conclude that it was a successful attempt to communicate my ideas.

Another part that I enjoy was seeing other people’s work and commenting. I think not seeing what others are doing makes the class extremely boring and the lack of opinions is extremely frustrating so the session was really refreshing.

I love Nicole’s and Tanya’s works. They are very well executed for the short amount of time that we were given (2days) and lovely to look at.

I would love to be surrounded by hard-working professionals just like the comics residency back in Angouleme. A room full of people with amazingly scary mind-blowing work is much better for productivity in my opinion. A little competition goes a long way but I guess we all have our own ways.
