The negatives

In my EP&IV project, one of the things that I did was negative space drawings. At one point I doodled some abstract negative space images into my notebook and started to become interested in it. Here are some experiments / artworks that I’ve have done :

I showed this to Ben and he seemed interested in it as well and pointed out that even though I feel like I’m drawing nothing somehow it looks like it represents something.

It’s a very satisfying feeling to draw these. The shapes are not planned or sketched. They form themselves after I finished each square. It’s sort of a meditation or a connection of my mind and my hands.

After doing a few of these in small scales, I drew them bigger with texture and shading.

I really like the texture it created but I’m not sure about the method as I don’t really use pencil/charcoal and it got really messy. However when I tried to create them digitally, they don’t feel as satisfying.

Drawing a more figurative shape doesn’t intrigue me as the abstract ones neither.

I think the vagueness and abstract quality makes a more interesting work so I will stick with non-figurative for this project.

The white space that turned into some sort of hidden shapes is really attractive to me so I’m moving forward into making a larger scale / more physical version.
