WIP part 2

Talking about the mechanism. I’ve been consulting with the Creative Technology Lab, especially Elle who’s been really nice to me. There are a few problems at the moment.

The original plan is that we were going to use this water pump to push air into the work.

BUT after trying it out with Elle, it barely pushes any air out as it was meant for a water tank or something. So I have to buy my own air pump.

The piece is also not suited to be installed on the wall too because I don’t know how to hide these machines without making an obvious box behind the canvas. James suggested that I’ll have to hide it in a plinth anyway. So the sketch changed to this:

And with this I will display a sculpture/comics piece next to it like so:

BUT while consulting with James something came up. A breathing pile of thoughts. It is a way I can combine the idea of anxiety or this unexplainable feeling in comics form but also sculpture and also this breathing/moving thing. Like so:

I’m torn between all these ideas but one thing is for sure: I HAVE TO TEST THIS AIR PUMPING THING FIRST. This is why I’m making a makeshift plinth with a fan to see how it will go while I wait for the actual big air pump.

The coding process is like an entirely new language but Elle helped me a lot.

Opted for a computer fan just to test the codes. The program we use is called Arduino and it connects with the motor of the fan. It is coded to start and stop every few seconds. (We tried the wave code but it is not strong enough)

My makeshift plinth.

For the actual plinth I will have to make a small opening for the wire as I cut out a space in the cardboard box. The fan is very light.

More updates in part 3.
