A reflection/conclusion to the session we had on Friday about The Chicago Imagists, an art movement from the 60’s throughout the 80’s.
The overall movement or groups were really strange and fun. They represented an alternative side of the art world with personalities that reminded me of the comic artists I’ve met in Angouleme, France.
Various techniques and subjects were explored but they fit in the same category for some reason. Maybe they just didn’t fit in with anyone else. The artworks were a mixture of comics, commercial art and surrealism and can sometimes be unusual and grotesque. It was the opposite of abstract minimalism that was dominant in the New York art scene at the time. The movement somehow wasn’t really included in the usual art history even though it spanned across almost two decades.
Out of all the artists that I saw from the exhibition I like Roger Brown and Ray Yoshida the most. Among all of the chaotic and colourful works, their work seems more still and structural. Here are some more works that I looked up from the two artists :

And these are some bits of details from the exhibition that I think can be useful : price tag, unusual frames and layered plexiglass.
