Boiling up some plastic

Another mini experiment about organic shapes and forms. My friend from RCA who I collaborated with last term gave me micro plastic beads to play with. Here’s how it transforms into small organic sculptures.

I took some calico fabrics and cut them up into rectangles. Two rectangles are needed for one object.

step-01

Then I sketched the shape on the fabric with pencil and stitch the rectangles together with black thread according to the shape. A small opening was left in order to fill in the micro plastics.

step-02

I carefully inserted the micro plastic beads into the space between the two rectangles (which was a pain btw) and then stitched them close.

step-03

Then I put it in the pot with water and started boiling. The temperature had to be really high for the plastic to melt and form the shape properly. It took about 15-30 minutes.

step-04

After it became solid I took it out and cut up the fabric to get the sculpture/object out. For the first one, the temperature wasn’t high enough so it’s not as smooth as it should be but the second try was better.

step-05step-06

I really love the outcome but the plastic itself is not really affordable. If I ever wanted to make larger sculptures or make more of these I’ll have to purchase it from a supplier. This batch is a sample batch from my friend’s course. I enjoyed making 3D objects though. They will join my collection of objects like my foam city.
