Hans Hemmert and the inflatables

More Balloon researching.

Came across the works of Berlin-based artist Hans Hemmert. His work is very conceptual but also very pleasing to look at. I really like when he mentioned in an interview that working with this type of material is like sculpting air. It is a very interesting note.

I really like how his work fills up the space and also give light.

This piece is also a combination of performance as it required a person to be in the balloon.

In this piece the latex balloon is deflated to cover up the room.

Fear is created.

In this video interview we can see a glimpse of how he makes his balloons as they are not manufactured but made by hand in the studio.

With some research I’ve also found a very easy tutorial on how to make custom inflatables. The only problem is that it might look a bit too DIY. I will test it out later on.

While researching more on inflatable art I also came across a news article about the inflatable installation Dreamspace by Maurice Agis which actually killed two people because it hit a cctv pole and eventually flipped over. The work took 10 years to install. Such a sad ending for everyone involved.

The space looks amazing but sadly it violates safety laws.
